Formation. (Apr 42)

Ordered formed on 12 April 1942 by Luftwaffenkommando Ost in Central Russia to take over tactical command of all combat air units deployed in that sector following the departure of VIII. F1iegerkorps for South Russia. The new Stab was largely made up of the Stab of the former Nahkampfführer Süd/VIII. Fliegerkorps.[2]


Central Russia, Poland and Northeast Germany. (Apr 42 - May 45)

16 Apr 42: advance party of the Stab proceeded via Smolensk to set up HQ and command post at Fp. Dugino/65 km S of Rzhev where it remained until the general withdrawal from that area in January 1943.[3]

27 Jan 43: Stab transferred to Orel-West airfield and temporarily placed under Lw.Kdo. Don to support the defensive fighting along the left flank of AOK 2 and the area of the Soviet breakthrough between AOK 2 and Pz.AOK 2. To 21 Mar 43, the Division flew 8,987 sorties claiming the destruction of 289 enemy aircraft, 188 tanks, 1,968 vehicles and large numbers of troops, for the loss of 65 aircraft and 46 aircrew. The main units assigned during this period were NAGr.15, JG 51, II./KG 4, III./St.G.1 and 1. Störkampfstaffel/Lw.Kdo.Ost.[4]

5 Jul 43: under Luftflotte 6 (ex-Lw.Kdo. Ost) since 6 May 1943, supported AOK 9 in the Orel sector during Operation "Zitadelle", the massive offensive against the Kursk Salient with Stab at Orel. Subordinated during July: NAGr. 4; NAGr. 10; NAGr. 15; Stab, I., III., IV./JG 51; 15.(span.)/JG 51; I./JG 54; Stab, I. and Pz.Jäg.St./ZG 1; Stab, I., II., III./St.G. 1; III./St.G. 3; III./KG 1; Stab/KG 3; Stab, II., III./KG 4; Stab, II., III./KG 51; Stab, I., II., III./KG 53.[5]

31 Aug 43: Stab now at Novgorod-Seversky/100 km NNE of Konotop after withdrawing from

Orel.[6]

Jan 44 - 19 Mar 44: Stab at Bobruisk.[7]

19 Mar 44: Stab ordered to move to Pinsk this date.[8]

23 Apr 44: Stab transferred from Pińsk to Biała Podlaska/158 km E of Warsaw.[9]

Jun 44: Stab ordered back to Bobruisk at the beginning of June for a short period.[10]

28 Jun 44: Stab now at Baranowicze, had just evacuated Bobruisk following the commencement of the massive Soviet Belorussian offensive on 22 June, and still under Lfl.6.[11]

Jul – Aug 44: Stab withdrew via Janów/40 km W of Pińsk and located in Warsaw by 25 July.[12]

Sep 44 – Jan 45: Stab at Topolowa/N Poland.[13]

1 Feb 45: Stab at Stolp/Pomerania under Lfl.6, and a little later under II.Flg.Korps.[14]

1-8 Mar 45: Stab transferred from Stolp to Neubrandenburg - still under II.Flg.Korps.[15]

29 Mar 45: Stab at Neubrandenburg under Lfl.6 in support of Pz.AOK 3.[16]

Apr 45: the Divisionsstab is believed to remained at Neubrandenburg until the town and airfield were taken by advancing forces of Soviet 2d Belorussian Front around 28 April. From 12 April it was under Lw.Kdo. Nordost. What happened to it after late April has not been found.

Formation, History and Losses. (Apr 42? - Apr 45?)

Date of formation and disbandment unknown. Nor have any loss report entries been found. However, on 28 Jun 44 it was reported to be at Fp. Baranowicze/E Poland. Nothing else is known.[17]
