Formation. (Nov 38)
Formed 1 November 1938 at Dievenow (new) with Do 18 flying boats.[1]
North Germany. (Nov 38 - Oct 39)
4 Sep 39: transferred from Dievenow to Hörnum on the island of Sylt with 12 Do 18s the day after Britain and France declared war on Germany following the German attack on Poland on 1 September. Subordinated to Stab/Küstenfliegergruppe 306 (Führer d. Luft West).
26 Sep 39: flew reconnaissance over the Great Fisher Bank area in the North Sea in search of British Home Fleet surface units that had sortied from Scapa Flow.
25 Oct 39: renamed 3./Kü.Fl.Gr. 406 at Hörnum.
