2./Kü.Fl.Gr. 506 (1st)
2.(F)/Kü.Fl.Gr. 506 (First Formation)
Formation and History. (Jul 37 - Oct 39)
Formed 1 July (1 December?) 1937 at Dievenow/Pomerania (new) with Dornier Do 15 (Militär-Wa1 33) flying boats. Staffel movements in conjunction with the general mobilization order and the start of the war on 1 Sep 1939 are unclear, but it appears to have deployed from Dievenow to Kamp/Pomerania around 26 Aug and then a few days later moved to Hörnum on the island of Sylt where it was based on 4 Sep 1939 with a full complement of 12 Do 18 flying boats. These aircraft had been taken over from 2./Kü.Fl.Gr. 306 and still carried that Staffel's markings. Long-range reconnaissance missions over the North Sea began immediately and on 5 September Do 18 (K6+WK) was slightly damaged in an encounter with a RAF Hudson off the east coast of Scotland. On 26 Sep, Do 18 (K6+YK) was shot up by British carrier fighters and force landed while searching for Royal Navy surface units in the Great Fisher Bank area; the crew of four were all taken prisoner. Renamed 1./Kü.Fl.Gr. 406 at Hörnum on 25 Oct 1939.
