3./Kü.Fl.Gr. 106

Formation and Early History. (Jul 36 - Sep 39)

Formed 1 July 1936 at List on the island of Sylt (ex-3.(Mz)/Fliegergruppe (See) 106) with

He 59s. On 1 July 1937, it was renamed 3.(Mz)/Küstenfliegergruppe 406, but re-established the same date at Kiel-Ho1tenau (ex-3.(Mz)/Kü.Fl.Gr. 206), again with He 59s. Three months later, on 1 October, it moved to Borkum in the East Frisian Islands, where it was based at the beginning of the war with 10 He 59s.[1]

North Germany and Holland. (Sep 39 - Feb 41)

26 Sep 39: its first wartime loss occurred at Borkum this date when a He 59 was written off to unknown causes.

26 Sep 39: elements of the Staffel moved from Borkum via Rantum and List, both on the island of Sylt, to Bad Zwischenahn, arriving there on 11 October.

15 Nov 39: all or elements of the Staffel transferred to Grossenbrode and then returned to Borkum on 6 December.

22/23 Nov 39: flew a night mine-laying mission to the Thames Estuary with He 59s, no losses reported.

28 Nov 39: a He 59 was slightly damaged at its moorings during an attack on Borkum by RAF Blenheim Is.

6/7 Dec 39: carried out a night mine-laying mission off the east coast of England losing 2 He 59s in take-off and landing accidents at Borkum.

Dec 39: in December it began converting to the He 115, and by 10 May 1940 this had been completed as the records show it at Borkum under Stab/Kü.Fl.Gr. 106 with 8 He 115Bs and 4 He 115Cs. The Staffel was apparently not operational during the period of conversion, since it did not report any losses until 14 June when a He 115C landed at Amsterdam-Schellingwoude after being slightly damaged by AA fire. The main body of the Staffel was still based at Borkum and Norderney until late July so this particular Heinkel was probably part of a small detachment operating from Schellingwoude at that time. From 27 July forward all of the Staffel’s missions were carried out from this seaplane base in Holland as part of 9. Fliegerdivision operations against Great Britain.

1 Aug 40: 2 He 115s crashed while landing at Amsterdam-Schellingwoude on return from mine-laying sorties, both 100%, both crews safe.

25 Aug 40: He 115 crashed on landing at Schellingwoude, 100%, crew safe.

27 Aug 40: a He 115C returned to Amsterdam-Schellingwoude shot up by a RAF night fighter, 30%, crew WIA.

29 Aug 40: He 115 (M2+LL) crashed due to engine failure (location not reported), 100%, 1 KIA and 3 MIA.

19 Sep 40: He 115C{M2+CL) crashed on return from a mining sortie along the English coast, killing Staffelkapitän Hptm. Kannengiesser and his crew.

Oct 40 – Feb 41: the Staffel's service with the He 115 came to an end in October when it transferred to Barth close to the German Baltic coast NE Rostock to begin conversion to the Ju 88 A-5, crashes of this type being recorded there on 25 November and 9 December. Toward the end of February 1941 it was renamed 3./Kampfgruppe 106 at Barth.
