3.(Mz)/Kü.Fl.Gr. 506 (First Formation)
Formation and History. (Jul 37 - Oct 39)
Formed 1 July (1 December?) 1937 at Dievenow/Pomerania (new) with Heinkel He 59 twin-engine floatplanes. Transferred from Dievenow to Pillau-Neutief/East Prussia o/a 26 August 1939 for the campaign in Poland and the start of World War II. Attacked Polish naval forces in Danzig (Gdansk) Bay and near Hela on 1 September with its 10 He 59s, and then struck Gdingen (Gdynia) harbor the next day. On 3 Sep, a bomb hit was scored on the Polish minelayer Gryf during a follow-up raid near Hela (Hel) on Danzig Bay. Polish naval targets had been largely overcome or subdued by the end of the first week, and on 13 Sep the Staffel was ordered back to Germany to fly routine patrols in the western Baltic. Renamed 2./Kü.Fl.Gr. 806 at Dievenow on 25 (22?) October 1939.
