5.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 23

Formation and Training. (Dec 40 - May 41)

Formed or ordered formed around the second half of December 1940, possibly in Holland, using assets provided by 4.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 23 and equipped with Henschel Hs 126s. After training and work-up in the West, transferred to Poland.[1]

Central Russia. (Jun 41 - Apr 42)

22.6.41: Brest-Litovsk area in eastern Poland under Koluft Panzergruppe 2/Army Group Center for the attack on the Soviet Union this date - assigned to support XXXXVII. Armeekorps (mot) along a line of advance from the Brest-Litovsk area to Baranowicze - Minsk (29 June) - Orsha - Smolensk (16 July) - Konotop (25 August) - Kiev Pocket (16 September) - Sevsk (1 October) - Orel (3 October) - Tula area (1 November) and then the Mikhailov area/100 km east of Tula (25 November).

30.6.41: Staka Oblt. Matthiesen injured during forced landing at Fp. Baranowicze, but it is not known if this necessitated his replacement.

1.7.41: Staffel cited in dispatches when its main motor transport column, moving forward at night from Baranowicze, encountered and engaged a pocket of cut-off Soviet troops and quickly took 300 of them prisoner.

16.7.41: 6 of the Staffel’s ground personnel killed and 6 more wounded during enemy air attack on Fp. Orsha.

11.8.41: based at Smolensk-South under Gruppenfliegerstab 31 in support of XXXXVII Motorized Corps.

20.9.41: ordered to Shatalovka/East by Luftflotte 2 for assignment to II. Fliegerkorps.

22.9.41: Hs 126 shot up by AA-fire at Novgorod Severski/90 km N of Konotop, 30%, 1 WIA.

22.9.41: temporarily under Koluft AOK 4, but ordered relieved this date and transferred to Seshchinskaya for operations under Nahkampfführer 2/II. Fliegerkorps.

12.10.41: based at Orel.

18.10.41: Bf 110 E-2 (6K+YN) failed to return from a recce mission over the Tula area, 100%, 3 MIA.

21.10.41: based at Orel.

27.10.41: Fw 189 shot up and crash landed at Fp. Orel, 30%, 2 WIA.

20.11.41: Fi 156 crashed at Fp. Orel, 100%, 1 killed.

12.41 – Apr 42: Staffel returned to Germany in early December to rest and refit, but the decision was made in January 1942 to disband it. Many of the Staffel’s personnel were used to form Stabskompanie/Nahaufklärungsgruppe 5 in April 1942.
