Formation and Training. (c.Jan 41 - May 41)
Formed or ordered formed in January 1941 in the West (possibly at Brieg) using assets provided by 1.(H)/31 and equipped with Henschel Hs 126s.[1]
South Russia. (Jun 41 - Fall 41)
22.6.41: after training and work-up, transferred to southeast Poland and assigned to Koluft AOK 6/Army Group South for the attack on the Soviet Union that commenced this date. The Staffel’s line of advance took it across northern Ukraine via Zhitomir and Konotop. One usually reputable source (Dierich) states it was attached to XXIV. Armeekorps (mot), but this is incorrect.
24.7.41: Hs 126 B-1 crash landed at Fp. Zhitomir, 50%.
26.7.41: Hs 126 shot up by a fighter near Sabucha, 10%, Staka Hptm. v. Frankenberg WIA.
27.9.41: Hs 126 (5D+GN) shot down by a fighter over Olyshana/40 krn E of Romny, 100%, 2 MIA.
21.10.41: Bücker Bü 131 B-3 damaged taxiing at Fp. Konotop, 10%.
10.41: like most of the temporary or stepsister (H) Staffeln formed at the end of 1940 and beginning of 1941, 5.(H)/31 was dissolved in October or November 1941 and then formally disbanded around January 1942.
