Formation. (Sep 43)
Formed 15 September 1943 with effect from 15 October 1943, probably at Chantilly/40 km N of Paris (ex- all or elements of Stab/Jagdfliegerführer West). Both directly and through several subordinate Jagdfliegerführer, controlled day and night fighter forces over North, West, Central and South France under II. Jagdkorps. The Division subordinated Jagdfliegerführer 5 as well as Ln.-Regiment 205 and 215, these providing radar coverage and other communications within its territory.[1]
France. (Sep 43 - Aug 44)
Feb 44: Stab now in Jouy-en-Josas, a western suburb of Paris.[2]
Jun 44: Jouy-en-Josas.[3]
10 Jul 44: Jouy-en-Josas.[4]
25 Jul 44: Jouy-en-Josas.[5]
18 Aug 44: Stab now at Compiègne - withdrawing from the Paris area.[6]
24 Aug 44: Gefechtsstand 5. Jagddivision trf from Compiegne to the outskirts of Namur.[7]
24 Aug 44: Stab arrived in Namur/Belgium - still withdrawing.[8]
Southwest Germany. (Sep 44 - Jan 45)
11 Sep 44: Stab resettled in Karlsruhe-Durlach and reported it was ready to resume operations, now under Luftwaffenkdo. West. Directed offensive and defensive fighter operations along the upper Rhine and over Alsace as well as tactical reconnaissance flights using JG 53, JG 76 and other units.[9]
1 Nov 44: Stab still at Karlsruhe-Durlach.[10]
16 Dec 44: Stab now at Hechingen/51 km SSW of Stuttgart.[11]
15 Jan 45: Hechingen - ordered renamed Stab/16. Fliegerdivision. The effective date of the re-designation was probably 26 January 1945.[12]
