DEFE3 12 covers the decryption period between 13th December 1943 and 16th December 1943 – however, some information related to dates outside this period.

In the attached file are some notes/summaries transcribed from the pages of DEFE 3/13 I hope that these are of assistance to any fellow researchers.

280 VL1788 11/12/43 On 11/12/43 24 aircraft of I./KG54 left Cameri for Obertraubling near Augsberg (?). Ansbach informed.

12.00 – 12.30 hrs Z, 22 of II./KG 54 left Bergamo-South 11.30 – 13.00 hrs Z for Augsberg area (Comment see VL1465 under fourthly for mention of crews to be sent to I./KG 54 at Ansbach and II./KG 54 at Garlingen.

273 VL1793 11/12/43 Information sent to Flifue Croatia on 11/12/43 summarised captured documents of I Air Base, brought by a German Lieutenant on09/12/43 from Livno. Documents deal with flying over of a Croatian Do 17 on 30/11/43 with 7 passengers, containing details about an Italian aircraft TF 3 and its intended employment and number of flying personnel.

Destruction of the Do 17 by an Hs 126 shortly before its take off from Glamoc to Brindisi. Seven dead including two ??. Aircraft burnt out.

Interrogation of pilot Lt ?? at Roman One air base.

Croation and English identity ?? for ??

Activity report of Roman One air base to ?? Staff.

Report on British (strong indications) airfield mission in Glamoc.

Report of British transport flight with fighter protection on 03/12/43 via Livno in direction of Glamoc.

Other details not known here.

Under consideration Flifue Croatia whether the captured Croatian Air Force Lieutenant was to be snet to Kwin or Zara. Comment by “Charlie” not to be passed to units in the field.

271 VL1795 12/12/43 14 Aircraft of II./KG 76 left Aviano for Obertraubling by 13.00 Hrs Z 12/12/43.

Comment – Obertraubling also first destination of I./KG 54 on way to Ansbach see VL 1788 and comment.

270 VL1796 12/12/43 Pilot of a FW 190 of II./SG 4 reported on 20/11/43, according information of 12/12/43 on appearance of an apparently new defensive weapon. According to observation three cylindrical objects concerning which were fired up at the attacking aircraft. A container came in contact with the aircraft.

There was a violent shock, aircraft remained capable of flying. On landing scratches were discovered on propeller and wings apparently caused by a twisted wire. Wing was badly knocked about, a brake cable on the undercarriage was broken and one undercarriage fairing torn open.

261 VL1801 10/12/43 Requested on 10/12/43 that Marburg (comment: Equals Maribor) airfield be made available as parking airfield to relieve congestion in Agram area.

Secondly – Flifue Croatia to detach officerto Luftflotte 2 to put his operational experience at the disposal of OC staffel of 1./NSGr 9 at Udine. Comment - agreed with DD item 3.

Staffel of NSGr 9 may be renaming of 3./NSGr 7 which was forming at Udine late November. (VL439)

113 VL1911 01/12/43 On 01/12/43 signals arrangements for a fighter operation (comment – nature unknown) were to be handed to Pancevo, Agram-Lucko, Mostar, Banja Luka, Butmir, Tirana, Devoli and Podgirica by an NCO of JG 27 within next few days.

Secondly – on 14/12/43, in connection with same preparations ammunition and equipment, not available with ARC Sarajevo, was stated to have been indented for on 10/12/43. Adequate ground staff not available but units at Mostar.

Secondly, on 13/12/43 A/S patrol with 3 Arados off VathiBay 12.45 – 14.45 hrs Z.

Thirdly, total effort Flifue Croatia on 14/12/43 was 149 sorties for “Penitent” undertaking including reconnaissance 46 Hs 126, Bombers 62 Ju 87, 2 Do 17, 39 He 46.

Some details: 3 Ju 87 attacked gun positions, ammunition dump and hutted camp Mljet Island, 18 Me 109, 2 Hs 126, 4 Ju 52 operated from Mostar before 19.00 hrs Z, NAGr 12 carried out photo reconnaissance Brac and Hvar Islands and harbours Vis, Komiza, Vela Luja, Korkula 06.30 – 07.15 hrs Z.

63 VL1954 15/12/43 For 16/12/43 reconnaissance orders 12.00 hrs Z 15/12/43 to Flifue Albania were reconnaissance (fair indications photo) as on previous day.
61 VL1956 15/12/43 Engaging of Allied fighter and heavy fighter sweeps were orders for 16/12/43 to Flifue Albania evening 15/12/43.
60 VL1957 14/12/43 Total effort Flifue Croatia up to 14/12/43 for Operation Linnet 149 sorties comprising 46 Hs 126 reconnaissance, and 62 Ju 87, 2 Do 17 and 39 He 46 which dropped total of approximately 36 tons of bombs.

36 VL1973 15/12/43 Air escort arrangements evening 15/12/43 for convoy in VL1969: 4./126 (Suda) to transfer 2 Arados to Leros at first light, ops © ops to be controlled by the Leros Staffel (Comment – 3./126 see VL1882). The Leros Staffel to take over protection with 3 Arados at a time until convoy enters territorial waters. During voyage in territorial waters defensive patrol to be flown outside. 30 minutes before convoy leaves territorial waters anti-submarine patrol to be made in sea area at point at which it leaves territorial waters. After leaving territorial waters close escort until convoy arrived Symi. Last landing by 3 Arados in Rhodes. Allied MTB's to be expected. Turkish territorial limit to be respected.
30 VL1977 14/12/43 In VL1943 under thirdly substitute Linnet for Penitent. Scale of effort is for whole undertaking up to and including 14/12/43. Comment – VL1957 refers.
