Stab/Flak-Rgt. 22 (o)

Formed 15 November 1938 at Brandenburg/Havel as a regimental headquarters and staff to exercise command and control over various Flak-Abteilungen and Flak-Batterien that would from time-to-time be assigned to it.[1]

History

1938-39: Brandenburg/Havel under Luftverteidigungskdo. 1.

Aug 39: on mobilization 26 August, moved to Magdeburg and given its wartime assignment as Flakgruppe Magdeburg.

c.Nov 39 - 1945: transferred to Berlin as Flakgruppe Berlin-Süd with Stab at Berlin-Lankwitz by 1943. Under Luftverteidigungskdo. 1 and then 1. Flak-Division from 1 September 1941. It was still at Berlin-Lankwitz at the end of 1944 as Flakgruppe Berlin-Süd, and it is believed to have remained there until the latter part of April 1945. The Regiment subordinated a very large number of diverse Flak units, with changes occurring nearly every month. A complete monthly listing of these from November 1943 through December 1944 can be found on Michael Holm’s outstanding web site: www.ww2.dk

I./Flak-Rgt. 22 (gem. mot.)

Formed on 1 April 1935 at Döberitz near Berlin. Some (but not all) sources state that it was formed by renaming and incorporating into the Luftwaffe Heeres Flak-Abt. 9 and from 1 April to 1 November 1935 used the cover designation Fahr-Abt. Döberitz (Transport Detachment or Column Döberitz). Had a Stab and 1.-5. Batterien.[2]

7 Sep 39: a week after the campaign began, attached to a motorized Kampfgruppe belonging to the 3. leichte Division and engaged in heavy fighting around the Radom pocket, particularly distinguishing itself by stopping an attempted breakout by the Polish 16th Division. The Abteilung suffered heavy casualties during this action, including its Kommandeur. Returned to Germany (Döberitz?) after Poland fell.

10 May 40: Blitzkrieg West - the attack on France and the Low Countries under Flak-Rgt. 101/I. Flakkorps. Almost certainly remained in France after the armistice on 22 June.

From the beginning of the war to this date it had accumulated the following record: 127 enemy aircraft shot down; 123 tanks destroyed; 117 artillery and anti-tank guns destroyed; 126 mortars destroyed; 160 machineguns destroyed; 273 motor vehicles destroyed; 16,800 counted enemy killed; and, 1,853 prisoners taken.

II./Flak-Rgt. 22 (gem. mot.)

Formed on 1 April 1935 at Brandenburg by (according to some but not all sources) renaming Heeres Fla-MG-Abteilung 2. From 1 April to 1 November 1935 it used the cover designation Fahr-Abt. Brandenburg (Transport Detachment or Column Brandenburg). Initially had a Stab and 6.-8. leichte Batterien. It was completely reorganized on 15 November 1938 as a mixed (gemischte) Abteilung with a Stab and 6.-10. Batterien. In 1942, 8. Batterie was given to Flak-Rgt. Hermann Göring and replaced with a new Batterie.[3]

History

1935-39: in training at Brandenburg under Luftkreis II (to Feb 38), Luftgau III (to Jul 38) and Luftverteidigungskdo. 1 (to Aug 39).

Aug 39: mobilized c.26 August and assigned to Koluft/8. Armee for employment in south Poland. After Poland capitulated toward the end of September, the Abteilung returned to Germany (Brandenburg?).

1940-41: deployed to France, but it is not clear if it took part in the attack on France and the Low Countries that began on 10 May. Elements of the Abteilung were at Den Helder and De Kooy in the Netherlands in summer 1940. Surviving records have an entry stating that it did not arrive in north-west France until June 1941, but there is no indication where it came from, but the Netherlands seems most likely.

May 42: Abteilung Stab reportedly at Rennes.

4 Jun 42: 7. and 10. Batterien reported downing enemy aircraft in the Bayeux area in Normandy this date, thus providing an indication of where these two batteries at least were stationed.

Aug 42: all or elements now at Le Mans/Normandy.

2 Nov 42: now at Cognac in SW France.

19 May 43: 1 man killed and 8 wounded during an enemy air attack on Bordeaux.

Nov 43: NE France under Flak-Rgt. 132/16. Flak-Div.

Jan - Apr 44: protecting the V-1 launch sites and related targets in the Amiens – Watten area under Flak-Rgt. 37/16. Flak-Div.

6 May 44: now at St.-Omer/NE France under Flak-Rgt. 11.

10 Jun 44: had just moved (from Arras?) to Caen following the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6 June.

11 Jun 44: reported the following losses - 5 KIA, 14 WIA, 3 x 8.8 cm guns and 1 x 2.0 cm gun, 1 x 60 cm searchlight, 2 x predictors, 3 x half-tracks, 8 trucks and various other equipment. [4]

18 Jun 44: engaged around St.-Louet - became a component of Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3 this date.

24 Jun 44: deployed in the Tracy-Bocage – Villers-Bocage area/29 km E of Saint-Lô. [5]

6 Jul 44: entire Abt. en route to the St.-Pair – St.-Pierre – Canteloup area. [6]

15 Jul 44: Normandy under Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3/III. Flakkorps.

21 Jul 44: 6./22 deployed in the vic. of Cleville under Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3. [7]

17 Aug 44: manning tank ambush strong points 4 km E of St.-Pierre – sur – Dives under Flak-Assault-Rgt. 3. [8]

21 Aug 44: guarding crossings and supply roads around Cormeilles. [9]

1 Sep 44: Namur area under Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3/III. Flakkorps.

12 Oct 44: Jülich near Aachen under Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3/III. Flakkorps.

Dec 44: Eifel area under III. Flakkorps.
