Gefechtsverband Schmidt


Formed o/a mid-December 1942, probably at either Seshchinskaya or Smolensk-North on the Central Sector of the Eastern Front, to direct air support efforts around Velikiye Luki where the German garrison had been surrounded following a major Soviet offensive that commenced on 24 November. Its commander was Obstlt. Heinz-Joachim Schmidt, the Gruppenkommandeur of II./KG 4. Units tactically assigned included II. and III./KG 4, elements of I., III. and IV./JG 51 and components of St.G. 1. Disbanded o/a 16 January 1943, the date the garrison surrendered after all relief efforts had failed. The Stab of the Gefechtsverband was probably Gruppenstab II./KG 4.
