Gefechtsverband Tonne
Formed 10 July 1943 at Gerbini/Sicily with Stab/SKG 10, II. and III./SKG 10, I. and II./Schlachtgeschwader 2. It was a consolidation of all fighter-bomber forces on Sicily and in South Italy under Major Günther Tonne, the Kommodore of Schnellkampfgeschwader 10, in immediate response to the Allied invasion of Sicily on the same date, primarily to attack the shipping off the beaches in southeastern Sicily. Major Tonne was killed in a crash at Reggio on 15 July when his engine failed on take-off and Gefechtsverband Tonne was dissolved over the next several days.[1]
