Formation and History. (Dec 43 - May 45)

Formed o/a 1 December 1943 at Pontecchio near Bologna in northern Italy to take command of all fighter defenses, including Italian, in North Italy. According to some accounts, Oberst von Maltzahn was appointed to this post on 5 October 1943 while other accounts give 1 December 1943. So the date of formation may have been earlier than 1 December. Subordinated to Luftflotte 2, control was exercised through four Fighter Sector Commanders: Jagdabschnittsführer Mitte, Ost, Süd and West. In August 1944 the Stab was moved to Verona, and from October its subordination was to Kommandierender General der deutschen Luftwaffe in Italien, Luftflotte 2 having been disbanded. Operations at Verona came to an end on 29 April 1945 with the surrender of German troops in Italy.[1]
