Kurierstaffel 5


Formation. (Aug 39)

Ordered formed 26 August 1939 with 6 aircraft for assignment to AOK 10 at Oppeln. At the end of the campaign in Poland (Feb 40?) it exchanged identities with Kurierstaffel 4 (4 became 5 and 5 became 4).[1]


Poland, France, Balkans and South Russia. (Sep 39 - Oct 43)

11 Sep 40: Kl 35 (NI+AR) crashed near Laval/W France due to engine trouble, 100%, 1 injured.[2]

4 Nov 39: Kurierstaffel 5 located at München-Gladbach assigned to AOK 6. [3]

Sep 40: now based at Laval/France following the campaign in the West. [4]

11 Sep 40: Kl 35 (W.Nr. 1161, NI+AR), crashed due to engine failure near Laval 100%.[5]

29 Nov 40: Staffel reported a crew member died of oxygen starvation at Royan/W France.

29 Dec 40: in France assigned to Koluft/AOK 7.[6]

10 Feb 41: Bü 131 D-2 force landed at St-André/80 km W of Paris due to bad weather, 25%.

1 Mar 41: 2 men from the Staffel injured when struck by a propeller at Fp. Bussac near the Gironde estuary.

18 Apr 41: with AOK 2 (Koluft 2) for the invasion of the Balkans. [7]

2 May 41: Belgrade-Zemun under Koluft 2AOK 2. [8]

6 May 41: invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece - at Zemun near Belgrade under Koluft/AOK 2.[9]

Jun 41: transferred to Fp. Kadlubiska/53 km ESE of Zamość in SE Poland for the attack on Russia.

22 Jun 41: assigned to Koluft/AOK 6 for the attack on the Soviet Union.[10]

26 Jun 41: Bü 131 force landed at Fp. Kadlubiska, 50%.

30 Jun 41: W 34 crashed at Fp. Kadlubiska due to pilot error, 85%.

Jul 41: now said to be at Adampol/72 km NE of Lublin.

Oct 41: said to be at Valki (Valky/Ukraine WSW of Kharkov). [11]

20.10.41: Ukraine and still under Koluft/AOK 6.[12]

30.10.41: Fi 156 C-2 (W.Nr. 434?) identified at Valki. [13]

1 Feb 42: based at Poltava under Koluft/AOK 6.[14]

19 Nov 42: still attached to AOK 6 and probably co-located with 6th Army’s HQ at Golubinskiy/68 km west of Stalingrad - the great defensive battle along the Don and in the Kalamuck Steppe began (to 18 Jan 43).

26 Nov 42: Fi 156 (V7+2Y) reported missing in the vicinity of the Don bend, 100%, Staffelkapitän Maj. Sachtleber + 1 MIA.

19 Jan 43: supported the defensive struggle between the Don and the Donets (to 4 Mar 43).

3 Feb 43: 3 of the Staffel’s ground personnel reported MIA at Stalingrad.

4 Feb 43: 4 Fi 156s (V7+SO, BZ+NT, SO+PA and VA+UM) all lost at Stalingrad, 4 pilots MIA.

Feb 43: officially reported as destroyed at Stalingrad with 6. Armee. However, like so many other units in the same report, Kurierstaffel 5 was quickly rebuilt.[15]

5 Mar 43: credited with taking part in the defensive fighting in the Donets region (to 3 Jul 43).

4 Jul 43: participated in the defense of the Mius – Donets position (to 17 Aug 43).

5 Jul 43: Fi 156 crashed and burned at Fp. Stalino-West, 90%.

18 Aug 43: took part in the withdrawal fighting from the Donets Basin west to the Kherson bridgehead.

1-15 Oct 43: still in South Russia - renamed 25./Fliegerverbindungsgeschwader 2.[16]
