Formation and History. (Jul 37 - Apr 45)
Formed 12 October 1937 in Berlin by renumbering Luftgaukommando 4 (Berlin), and following the reorganization of 1 April 1939, comprised the territory of Mark Brandenburg, the majority of Pomerania and the northern part of Saxony. With effect from 1 December 1941, Luftgaukdo. III began taking over the territory of Luftgaukdo. IV, the staff of which had been transferred to the central sector of the Russian Front to become Luftgaukdo. Moskau. During the next two years (Dec 41 to Feb 43) it was designated Luftgaukommando III/IV. By February 1943 the territorial amalgamation was complete and the dual designation was dropped. For the purpose of improving the air defense set up around Berlin, the territory of the Luftgau was extended to the west in 1944 with eastern Mecklenburg, the Prignitz and the Altmark regions taken over from Luftgaukdo. XI. At the same time, Lower Silesia, which had been acquired from Luftgau IV, was turned over to Luftgaukdo. VIII. The Stab of the Luftgaukdo. was in Berlin-Dahlem during 1942 and is believed to have remained there until Berlin fell at the end of April 1945.[1]
