Luftgaustab z.b.V. 4 (2d Formation)

(FpN: L 17833)

Gen.Maj. Albert Vierling (Dec 40 - Oct 41)?

Formation and History. (Dec 40 - Oct 41)

Formed o/a 1 December 1940 without a field post number, probably as a component of Stab/Luftflottenkdo. 4. Place of formation is not known, but it may have been in France, Vienna/Austria or possibly in Romania. A Feldpost number was finally assigned to it in May 1941. The history of this Stab to June 1941 is extremely unclear. For example, one contemporary document identifies a Luftgaustab z.b.V. 4 at Esquerdes in northeast France between St.-Omer and Boulogne on 3 September 1940.[1]

Balkans and South Russia

Apr 41: credited with participating in the Balkan campaign in Yugoslavia in support of Luftflotte 4.

29 Apr 41: Stab in Zagreb.

May 41: Stab possibly at Oels in Silesia - Luftgaustab z.b.V. 112 is believed to have been incorporated into Luftgaustab z.b.V. 4 there at this time, with z.b.V. 4 taking z.b.V. 112’s field post number.

22 Jun 41: South Poland - attack on the Soviet Union in support of Luftflotte 4, advancing through western Ukraine.

22 Jul 41: Stab now at Zhitomir/Ukraine.

3 Aug 41: Stab just arrived in Berdichev/Ukraine.

16 Sep 41: Stab arrived in Kirovograd/Ukraine this date.

22 Oct 41: Stab now at Dnepropetrovsk/Ukraine - between June and October 1941, the Stab is believed to have provided forward logistical support for V. Fliegerkorps/Luftflotte 4.

c.24 Oct 41: highly probable the Stab was ordered disbanded around this date in Dnepropetrovsk and the personnel used in the formation of Luftgaukommando Rostow. The last mention of Luftgaustab z.b.V. 4 was on 6 December 1941 at Dnepropetrovsk, but this may have been to report the completion of its disbandment. Alternatively, since its FpN was not deleted until the second half of 1942, a small cadre may have remained intact at Dnepropetrovsk attached to Luftgaukdo. Rostow as a standby staff pending future employment.
