Formation

Formed 1 June 1941 with Dornier Do 17s for the campaign in the East. Place of formation not known. [1]


South Russia

22.6.41: SE Poland (possibly at Flugplatz (airfield) Mielec/52 km NW of Rzeszow) directly under Koluft Heeresgruppe Süd for the attack on the Soviet Union this date. [2]

6.7.41: (Ob.d.H.) - Do 17Z (PB+MB) failed to return from a mission over western Ukraine, 100%, 3 MIA.

1.8.41: probably now at Fp.Berdichev.[3]

4.9.41: (Ob.d.H.) - Do 17P crash landed at Fp.Uman, 90%, 3 injured.

20.10.41: Central Ukraine (possibly at Kiev) and now directly under Luftflotte 4. [4]

22.11.41: believed to have moved forward to Poltava this date. [5]

1.1.42: (Ob.d.H.) - Do 17 shot up and crash landed on return to Fp.Poltava, 30%.

17.1.42: (Lfl.4) - Do 17 struck obstacle and crashed at Fp.Lvov/SE Poland, 55%, 1 injured

1.2.42: Poltava under Gruppenfliegerstab 12. [6]

18.2.42: at Poltava. [7]

4.6.42: (Lfl.4) - Do 17P (K7+GH) failed to return - no details, 100%, 3 MIA,

30.7.42: under FAG 4 - Staffel ordered to transfer one-half to Kharkov and the other half to Stalino this date. [8]

22.8.42: (Lfl.4) - He 111H-6 FTR from a mission in the Tuapse-Sochi area of North Caucasia, 100%, 5 MIA (but all later returned).

21.10.42: (Lfl.4) - Do 17P crashed at Mielec/SE Poland due to engine failure, 100%, Staka Maj. Kiesacz (Kusatz) (observer) + 3 killed.

11.42: Staffel based at Armavir/N Caucasia with He 111s and a few Do 217s. [9]

12.11.42: (Lfl.4) - Do 217E force landed at Fp.Armavir, 85%, 2 injured.

14.11.42: (Lfl.4) - He 111H-6 crashed near Rostov due to engine failure, 100%, 2 killed and 2 injured.

19.11.42: with the opening of the Soviet counteroffensive at Stalingrad this date, the Staffel began sending one or two planes to Fp.Morosovskaya/200 km WSW of Stalingrad to fly recce from there over the front around the city. [10]

6.1.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217 crashed west of Rostov due to icing, 100%, 4 KIA.

17.11.43; (Lfl.4) - He 111H FTR (failed to return) from a mission in the Nosovo area. 100%, 4 KIA.

20.1.43: Staffel ordered to transfer to Mariupol-West.[11]

3.2.43: (Lfl.4) - ground staff lost 1 KIA and 2 WIA during Russian air attack on Fp.Rostov-West.

22.2.43: advance elements of Staffel had just arrived at Fp.Zaporozhye-East, apparently from Mariupol. [12]

28.2.43: (Lfl.4) - He 111 (K7+MH) reported missing in the Taganrog area, 100%, 4 MIA.

3.43 – 6.43: Staffel returned to Germany to rest, refit and completely re-equip with Dornier Do 217Ms.[13]

22.6.43: ordered back to Zaporozhye-East, presumably from Germany.[14]

27.6.43: (Mitte) - Do 217M force landed at Fp.Märkisch-Friedland/Pomerania, 55%.

6.7.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M crash landed south of Fp.Brieg/Silesia, 607%, 1 injured.

10.7.43: at or en route to Zaporozhye-East - Staffel reported a total of 9(7) Do 217s on strength [15]

28.7.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M-1 damaged taxying at Fp.Zaporozhye-East, 20%.

11.8.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M ran out of fuel and crashed SE of Zaporozhye, 100%, 2 killed.

15.8.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M crashed and burned at Fp.Zaporozhye-East, 100%, 3 injured.

3.9.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M-1 (K7+CH) FTR - no details, 100%, 4 MIA.

4.9.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M-1 (K7+EH) FTR - no details, 100%, 4 KIA.

26.9.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M-1 crashed south of Kiev, 100%, 4 MIA.

14.11.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217M-1 (K7+DH) FTR - no details, 100%, 4 MIA.

11.43 – 2.44: Staffel not located - either reduced activity or returned to Germany again to rest and re-equip. 13.3.44: ordered to transfer immediately to Tatarka after the airfield there is completed[16]. Location of this airfield not known, but believed to have been in Moldavia to the west of Odessa.


Romania, Hungary and Austria

26.6.44: at Focşani/Romania under I. Fliegerkorps. [17]Still there in July and probably remained there until German forces withdrew from Romania at the end of August.

26.9.44: Szolnok/C Hungary under I. Fliegerkorps.[18]

3.10.44: Szolnok - reported a total of 8(6) Do 217s on strength.[19]

2.11.44: now at Ferihegy on the outskirts of Budapest with 4(2) aircraft.[20]

29.11.44: Szombathely/W Hungary under FAG 4 with 6(3) Do 217s.[21]

26.3.45: still at Szombathely under FAG 4.[22]

1.4.45: now at Hörsching/Austria after departing Hungary a day or two before.[23]

20.4.45: Hörsching.[24]

3.5.45: Hörsching directly under Luftwaffenkdo. 4 with Do 217s.[25]
