4. (F)/Nacht (short form in use 1942-45)


Formation

Formed 27 August 1942, probably at Brieg/Silesia, for assignment to Luftwaffenkdo. Don which was being set up at that time. Luftwaffe policy then in effect called for one night reconnaissance squadron to be assigned to each of the Luftflotten or equivalent commands in Russia. Equipped with Dornier Do 17s and Heinkel He 111s. [1]


South Russia

20.9.42: Kharkov under Lw.Kdo.Don with a total of 6(3) Do 17s and He 111s on strength. [2]

3.10.42: (Don) - Do 17P crashed taking off from Fp.Kharkov-Voichenko, 80%, 3 injured.

27.11.42: (Don) - Do 17P (K7+GM) failed to return from a mission east of Voronezh, 100%, 3 MIA.

30.1.43: (Don) - Do 217K-1 (K7+SM) FTR from the Novy Oskol - Yelets - Livny area, 100%, Oblt. Heinz Krickhahn (pilot), Oblt. Erich Grabke (observer) + 2 MIA.

31.1.43: under Lw.Kdo.Don, and believed to still be at Kharkov - Staffel reported 16(4) He 111s, Do 17s and Do 217s on strength. [3]

13.2.43: transferred to Poltava o/a this date along with the other recce units directly under Lw.Kdo.Don (i.e., 3.(F)/100); Kharkov was retaken by Soviet forces on 16 February. [4]

17.2.43: now under I.Fliegerkorps (Lw.Kdo.Don reverted back to its former designation effective this date).

13.3.43: (Lfl.4) - He 111H-5 force landed at Fp.Brieg in Silesia due to technical problems, 45%.

4/43: believed to have transferred from Poltava to Zaporozhye-East during March or early April to reinforce 1.(F)/Nacht which was stationed there.[5]

10.4.43: (Lfl.4) - Ju 88D-1 (F6+EM) apparently borrowed from 4. (F)/122, shot down by AA-fire over the Kuban Bridgehead, 100%, 4 MIA.

21.4.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217K-1 crashed at Fp.Zaporozhye-East, 100%, 5 killed.

18.6.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217K (K7+YM) FTR from the Slavyansk- -Krasnodar-Timoshevskaya area in North Caucasia, 100%, Oblt. Glinter ‘Brenner (observer) + 4 MIA.

3.7.43: (Lfl.4) - Do 217K-1 (K7+PM) FTR from the Volchansk area/NE of Kharkov, 100%, 5 MIA.

7/43 - 2/44: Staffel not located - reportedly withdrawn from operations and returned to Germany to rest, refit and convert to the Junkers Ju 88 and Ju 188. [6]


Central Russia and Latvia

2.3.44: at Baranowicze/130 km SW of Minsk under FAG 2.[7]

26.6.44: now at Bobruisk under FAG 2 with Ju 88s and Ju 188s.[8]

7/44: transferred to Riga-Spilve/Latvia at the beginning of July and reassigned to FAG 1 as a replacement for 3.(F)/Nacht. [9]

3.10.44: still at Riga-Spilve under FAG 1.[10]

10/44 - 12/44: no details - Staffel probably moved to Prowehren/East Prussia with FAG 1 in early October, but this needs confirmation.


Germany

8.1.45: according to orders this date, the Staffel was supposed to be renamed 6./Ergänzungs-Aufklärungsgeschwader 1 at Rahmel on the Baltic coast 25 km NNW of Danzig. [11]This order was apparently cancelled.

10.1.45: Staffel reported 15(12) Do 217s and Ju 88s on strength this date under Luftflotte 6. [12]

3.2.45: Staffel strength: Do 217 E/K/M 12 (7).[13]

6.2.45: transferred from Breslau to Königgrätz.[14]

9.2.45: (Lfl.6) - Do 217M-1 shot up by a fighter and force landed near Alt-Lönnewitz, 70%.

15.2.45: (Lfl.6) - Do 217M-1 FTR - no details, 100%, 3 MIA.

17.2.45: (Lfl.6) - Do 217M-1 crashed and burned - no details, 100%, 4 killed.

25.2.45: (Lfl.6) - Do 217M-1 FTR - no details, 100%, Oblt. Alfred Voll (observer) + 3 MIA.

28.2./1.3.45: 2 Do 217 operated in front of H.Gr. Mitte dropping 12 SD 50 on Flugplätz Lüben. The bombs landed between hangars and parked aircraft, several explosions and fires observed. 33,000 leaflets released.[15]

2.3.45: Strength Do 217 8(5).[16]

2./3.3.45: 4 Do 217 in front of H.Gr. Mitte again dropping 48 AB 70 on transport on the road between Forst and Sommerfeld, Bunzlau and Haynau in Qu. 7119, Qu. 8211 and on campfires in Qu. 6122. Bombs landed between and next to vehicles but results not seen.[17]

3./4.3.45: 1 Do 217 flew attacks in front of 9.Armee with 6 AB 70 dropped on a motor column travelling along the road between Sommerfeld and Crossen and 16 AB 70 on another motor column travelling on the road between Sommerfeld and Sorau. Bombs covered the roads but results not seen.[18]

6./7.3.45: 2 Do 217 in front of 4.Pz. Armee, 17.Armee and Armee Gr. Heinrici with 22 AB 70 bombs landing in and around vehicles – results not seen. 66,000 leaflets were also dropped.[19]

8.3.45: Staffel located at Alt Lönnewitz with FAGr 3 in strength of 8(5) Do 217s (also at Alt Lönnewitz – 2.(F)/100 and 2.(F)/121).[20]

9./10.3.45: 1 Do 217 operated in the area Crossen-Neusalz-Forst-Bunzlau dropping 16 AB 70 on a transport column on the Parchwitz-Lüben road - results not seen. Also released 33,000 leaflets.

23.3.45: (Lfl.6) - Do 217M-1 FTR - no details, 100%, 4 MIA.

26.3.45: at Alt-Lönnewitz under FAG 3.[21]

6.4.45: Staffel operating from Prague-Ruzyne.[22]

16.4.45: Staffel transferred to Hohenmauth.[23]

19./20.4.45: 1 Do 217 and 1 Ju 188 operated in the area Ratibor(?)-Pielitz(?)-Bautzen-Cottbus. 8 SD 70 on vehicles on roads in Qu.7186.[24]

3.5.45: at Hohenmauth (Vysoke Myto)/West-Central Czechoslovakia under FAG 3, but also using Prague-Ruzyne. [25]
