Formation. (Mar 43)
Formed March 1943, probably at or near Orel (at Fp. Kusnetsy/12 km SSW of Orel?) on the central sector of the Russian Front (ex-1.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 12). Equipped with Focke-Wulf Fw 189 reconnaissance aircraft.[1]
Central Russia. (Mar 43 - Jun 44)
3.5.43: a flight mechanic belonging to the Staffel was struck by a propeller and killed at Fp. Kusnetsy/12 km SSW of Orel.
5.43 – 6.43: under NAG 15 - had one Kette of two or three Fw 189s flying anti-partisan reconnaissance between Bryansk and Gomel in support of the 221. Sicherungs-Div. (221st Security Division).
19.6.43: Staffel completed its 3,000th operational sortie this date.
15.7.43: now based at Gomel under NAGr. 15. Gomel was taken by Russian forces on 25 Nov 43 so the Staffel transferred from there to another airfield – possibly Mogilev – in late October or the first half of November.
1.10.43: Staffel reported 1 x Fw 189A-1, 4 x Fw 189A-2 and 1 x Fw 189A-3 on strength.
12.43: still under NAGr. 15.
2.3.44: at Mogilev under NAGr. 15. Moved to Bobruisk before the end of March.
1.6.44: Staffel reported 7 x Fw 189A-2 and 2 x Fw 189A-3 on strength.
6.6.44: as the airfield at Bobruisk became too dangerous, transferred to Paztovichi/50 km W of Bobruisk.
22-26.6.44: withdrew to the west as the Soviets opened their massive summer offensive in Belorussia on 22 June.
Poland and Germany. (Jun 44 - May 45)
27.6.44: arrived at Luninec/50 km ENE of Pinsk under NAGr.15.
28.6.44: now listed at Baranowicze/E Poland under NAGr.15 with Fw 189s.
7.44 – 12.44: location of Staffel unclear - in Poland and/or East Prussia under NAGr.15 and then NAGr.4. Flugbuch (flight log) entries posted on the M.Holm web site state that it was operating from Siedlce/89 km E of Warsaw (17.-24.7.44), Bielany (24.7.44 to 8.44), Lobellen/21 km SE of Tilsit (8.44 – 12.9.44), Polangen (Palanga) on the coast of Lithuania (12.9.44 – 10.44), Eichwalde (Polessk)/40 km ENE of Königsberg in East Prussia (10.44 – 12.44).
1.12.44: Staffel reported 1 x Fw 189A-1, 2 x Fw 189A-2 and 2 x Fw 189A-3 on strength.
1.45: now at Praust near Danzig in West Prussia under NAGr.4.
30.1.45: Fw 189A-2 failed to return from a mission in the Arnswalde-Soldin area/65 km SE of Stettin, 100%, 3 MIA.
1.3.45: forward detachment of Staffel at Praust/near Danzig operating under NAGr.4 and the remainder at Neubrandenburg to the west of Stettin attached to NAGr.3.
2.3.45: Fi 156 reported missing in the Graudenz-Danzig area, 100%, pilot MIA.
26.3.45: at Danzig-Langfuhr under NAGr.4.
29.3.45: evacuated the Danzig area and now in transfer to Neubrandenburg under NAGr. 4.
3.5.45: Staffel last reported at Schweidnitz (Swidnica)/53 km SW of Breslau in Silesia under NAGr.4, having moved to Silesia with NAGr. 4 in April after refitting at Neubrandenburg in North Germany.
