Seenotkommando 16

Formation and History. (May 42 - Aug 44)

Formed May 1942 at Tripoli/Libya by renaming Seenotbezirksstelle Tripolis. Subordinated to Seenotbereichskdo. X (Siracusa/E Sicily, later Italy). Directed sea rescue operations along the coast of Tripolitania centered on Tripoli. Moved to Italy in early 1943 and by summer it was stationed at Orbetello/140 km NW of Rome. There is evidence that Seenotkdo. 16 may have either been destroyed in spring 1943 or surrendered in Tunisia in May and then immediately reestablished (at Orbetello?) using new personnel. Transferred to Piombino/120 km NW of Orbetello in early 1944. Ordered disbanded 19 August 1944.[1]
