Seenotstaffel 50

(Unit Code: 5W+)



Formation. (Aug – Oct 44)

Ordered formed 19 August 1944 at either Stavanger-Sola (See) or Oslo in Norway as part of the reorganization of the Seenotdienst. Assigned to Seenotgruppe 50, which was ordered formed the same date using Seenotdienst assets already in Norway, the Staffel was created by renaming 10. Seenotstaffel.[1]


South and Central Norway. (Aug 44 - May 45)

10 Sep 44: Staffel reported 10(8) Do 24, 2(2) He 115 and 7(7) Fw 58 on strength.[2]

25 Dec 44: Stavanger-Sola (See) under the tactical control of Fliegerführer 4/Komm.Gen.d.Dt.Lw. in Norwegen.[3]

1 Mar 45: Do 24 hit by a ship while it was tied to a buoy Bergen and damaged, 15%.

8 May 45: Staffel with 13 officers, 90 men and an unreported number of aircraft surrendered at Stavanger-Sola (See). In a desperate and heroic incident this final day of the war, Do 24 T-3(5W+BU) with a crew of 4 took off from Gossen near Trondheim, flew to Ventspils (Windau)/NW Latvia, picked up 37 men from 2.Battr./Flak-Abt. 127, and then flew across the Baltic and landed in Sweden.[4]
