Seenotstaffel 51

Formation. (Aug – Oct 44)

Ordered formed 19 August 1944 at Tromsø/N Norway as part of the reorganization of the Seenotdienst. Assigned to Seenotgruppe 51, which was ordered formed the same date using Seenotdienst assets already in Norway, the Staffel was created by renaming 5. Seenotstaffel.[1]


Northern Norway. (Aug 44 - May 45)

10 Sep 44: Staffel reported 11(10) Do 24s and 5(5) Ar 196s on strength.[2]

25 Dec 44: Tromsø under the tactical control of Fliegerführer 5/Komm.Gen.d.Dt.Lw. in Norwegen.[3]

8 Feb 45: Do 24 (P7+LN) damaged and sank during a night landing (location not reported), 100%, 4 MIA.[4]

Mar 45: transferred from Tromsø 325 km south to Bodø during a general withdrawal of German forces from northern Norway.[5]

22 Apr 45: Do 24T shot up and destroyed on the water at Kjevik/S Norway by an RAF Mosquito, 100%.

8 May 45: Staffel with 1 officer, 48 men and an unknown number of aircraft surrendered at Bodø.[6]
