Stab/Kü.Fl.Gr. 506 (Second Formation)



Formation. (Oct 39)

Formed 25 October 1939 at List on the island of Sylt (ex-Stab./Kü.Fl.Gr. 406). Commanded its own and attached Staffeln from other coastal units as directed.


North Sea and Occupation of Denmark and Norway. (Oct 39 - Sep 41)

Oct 39 – Mar 40: from List, controlled maritime and coastal reconnaissance missions and patrols over the North Sea under Führer der Luft West.

Apr 40 – May 40: occupation of Denmark and Norway from 9 April, moving from List to Trondheim/C Norway o/a 15 April and then to Stavanger-Sola/SW Norway around mid-May.

Jun 40 – Oct 40: maritime operations by assigned Staffeln in Norwegian waters and over the North Sea.

10 Sep 40: Stab made responsible this date for maritime reconnaissance over the North Sea in conjunction with Operation “Seelöwe” and the diversionary operations relating to it.[1]

6 Oct 40: ordered back to Germany, transferring from Stavanger-Sola to Norderney/Lower Saxony, now under Führer der Seeluftstreitkräfte, and then to Bad Zwischenahn/Lower Saxony on 4 November, back to Norderney in December, to Perleberg/Brandenburg 20 Feb 1941 and then to List on 1 April.

29 Apr 41: transferred from List to Westerland/Sylt and from there directed armed He 115 and Ju 88 recce missions along the east coast of England, including attacks on coastal convoys.

18 Sep 41: Stab at Westerland with 1./Kü.Fl.Gr. 506 (Westerland), 3./506 (detached at Grove/Denmark) and 2./Kü.Fl.Gr. 906 (Westerland).


Eastern Baltic. (Sep 41 - Oct 41)

21 Sep 41: ordered to Pärnu/Estonia via Riga/Latvia to support amphibious operations against Saaremaa (Ösel) Island off the Estonian coast and attack Soviet surface units in the eastern Baltic under the command of Fliegerführer Ostsee.

18 Oct 41: returned to Westerland from Pärnu.

19 Oct 41: officially re-designated Stab/Kampfgruppe 506.

  2. Weygoldt is not found in most lists and directories and when he is, his name is misspelled. He took general staff training in 1941-42 and was last identified Jul 43 as an Oberst and chief of staff of a Feldluftgaukdo. in Russia.
