Formation. (May 43)
Formed 1 May 1943 at Naples-Capodichino by renaming Geschwaderstab/KG z.b.V. “N”. It was assigned the Feldpostnummer formerly assigned to the disbanded KGr.z.b.V. Wittstock, which has led some to believe that this was its predecessor.[1]
Italy and Germany. (May 43 - Aug 44)
30 May 43: a Fi 156 assigned to the Geschwaderstab was bombed on the ground at Fp. Naples-Capodichino and severely damaged, 35%.[2]
22 Jun 43: Geschwaderstab at Naples-Capodichino/Afragola, located 10 km NE of Naples.[3]
10-30 Sep 43: Geschwaderstab under Transportfliegerführer 1 and responsible for the airlifting of German troops from Sardinia to Corsica, and then from 18 September the airlifting of 30,000 men from Corsica to the mainland, principally to Pisa, using II. and III./TG 2, III./TG 4, II./TG 5 and the Savoia Staffel.[4]
8 Oct 43: on conclusion of the Sardinia-Corsica operation, departed Italy and transferred to Leipheim/S Germany.[5]
14 Jan 44: Geschwaderstab possibly at Nikolayev/S Ukraine.[6]
Apr 44: at Zilistea/15 km NE of Buzău in C Romania.[7]
13 Aug 44: TG 5 ordered disbanded by OKL.
28-30 Aug 44: Stab disbanded. Its Feldpostnummer was deleted on 22 Sep 44.
