Formation. (Jan 44)
Formed January 1944 - at Bergamo – Orio al Serio airfield in North Italy with SM 82 transports. The Gruppe (Gruppo) belonged to the air force of the Italian Socialist Republic (R.S.I.), but operated outside Italy under the tactical command of the Luftwaffe. All personnel were Italian except for a small liaison team from the Luftwaffe that handled communications and coordinated operations with higher commands.[1]
Italy and Germany. (Jan 44 - Oct 44)
After initial training and workup, transferred to Goslar/N Germany on 23 June 1944 with around 40 SM 82s, most of which were taken over from IV./TG 3 during April. Subsequent orders for a transfer to Königsberg to begin operations were cancelled due to the rapid advance toward East Prussia by the Red Army. Limited supply missions were flown for a short time into the Baltic States, but full deployment never occurred. Departed Goslar on 20 October 1944 and returned to Bergamo – Orio al Serio without aircraft in a strength of 32 officers and 365 NCOs and men. Disbanded on arrival and reorganized as an anti-aircraft/anti-parachutist battalion for the defence of the airfields around Bergamo.
