Formation. (May - Jun 41)

No information as to exact date and place of formation found in the primary documents, but a published source states that it ordered formed on 29 April 1941. [1]


Central Russia, South Russia(?), Croatia and Bosnia. (Jun 41 - Jan 45)

29 Jun 41: Ar 66 crash landed at Biała to the west of Breast Litovsk in eastern Poland, 20%.[2]

6-7 Jul 41: based at Fp. Lepel/116 km NW of Orsha attached to Koluft/Panzergruppe 3.[3]

Jul 41: moved forward to Yanovichi/33 km NE of Vitebsk. [4]

Aug 41: now at Vitebsk after the airfield there was cleared and made safe for operations.

23 Sep 41: Ar 66 crash landed at Ripshevo (not located), 25%.

25 Sep 41: Vyazma area under Koluft/Panzergruppe 3.[5]

6 Oct 41: Fi 156 (W.Nr. 5167) crash landed at Kenjutine, 35 % damage. [6]

21 Oct 41: based at Fp. Shatalovka-East/55 km SE of Smolensk.[7]

22 Oct 41: Fi 156C-1 (W.Nr.0771) 10% damage in landing near Sychevka/68 km due N of Vyazma. [8]

25 Oct 41: Fi 156 (W.Nr. 5348) shot down near Kalinin (Tver)/165 km NW of Moscow, 100%, pilot KIA and Obstlt. Heinrich Bues WIA. [9]

Nov 41 – May 42: transferred to Germany and disbanded, with assets returned to the schools. Re-established c. 25 April 1942 for assignment in South Russia with station at Kharkov. The absence of any mention in documents or in the Loss Reports for all of 1942 is a mystery. However, we do know that it subsequently moved to Kiev/Ukraine.[10]

25 Mar 43: disbanded at Kiev with assets incorporated into Flugbereitschaft Luftgaukommando Moskau. [11]

Apr-May 43: re-established in May 1943 for assignment in Croatia and Bosnia under Fliegerführer Kroatien.[12]

4 Jun 43: based at Fp. Sarajevo-Rajlovac.[13]

17 Jul 43: at Sarajevo-Rajlovac with 10 aircraft, mostly W 34s.[14]

10 Aug 43: W 34 destroyed during a night ground assault on Fp. Sarajevo-Rajlovac by Tito’s Partisan forces, 100%.

13 Aug 43: still under Fliegerführer Kroatien - had 5 x W34s, 1 x He 111 and 2 x Fi 156s.[15]

29 Oct 43: W 34 (DA+KL) reported missing north of Knin in Dalmatia, 100%, 1 crew KIA and 3 passengers MIA.

3 Nov 43: W 34 force landed at Sabac/61 km W of Belgrade in Serbia, 60%.

29 Nov 43: Fi 156 force landed east of Zagreb and the aircraft burned by the Partisans, 100%, crew escaped and safe.

30 Nov 43: Bf 110 G-3 shot up by Partisan ground fire NE of Zagreb, 10%.

3 Dec 43: Fw 58 taxied into a bomb crater at Fp. Larrisa/Greece, 10%.

4 Dec 43: W 34 force landed SE of Fp. Velica Gorica near Zagreb due to engine failure, 20%.

1944: little information due to destroyed or lost primary documents.

29 May 44: He 111 bombed on the ground during Allied air attack on Fp. Zagreb-Lučko, 100%.

1 Feb 45: renamed Verbindungsstaffel 17. Fliegerdivision on or about this date. The change in the Feldpost Directory is dated 27 Feb 45.
