Verbindungsstaffel 60

(Unit Code: ?)

Formation. (May - Jun 41)

No information found in the extant primary documentation examined as to exact date and place of formation, but a published source says formation was at Allenstein/East Prussia in April 1941. [1]

Russia. (Jun 41 - Mar 45?)

21 Jun 41: Ar 66 crash landed at Allenstein/East Prussia due to pilot error, 15%.[2]

22 Jun 41: at Tilsit/East Prussia assigned to Koluft/Panzergruppe 4 for the advance toward Leningrad and Lake Ilmen.[3]

12 Jul 41: Ar 66 crashed taking off from Anisinovo (not located), 80%.

26 Jul 41: Fi 156 struck an obstacle at Fp. Pskov and crashed, 100%, pilot killed.

17 Aug 41: still under Koluft/Panzergruppe 4 in North Russia.[4]

Oct 41: departed the Northern Sector of the Eastern Front for the Central Sector and the attack toward Moscow.

16 Oct 41: Fi 156 (W.Nr. 5193) crash landed at Vorobyevo (not located) due to pilot error, 30%.

25 Oct 41: a man from the Staffel reported injured when he accidentally walked into a propeller at Gzhatsk/NE of Vyazma.

20 Nov 41: Staffel withdrawn from operations along the approaches to Moscow this date to prepare to return to Germany.[5]

Nov 41 – May 42: transferred to Germany and disbanded, with assets returned to the schools. Re-established c. 25 April 1942 at Straubing/Bavaria for assignment in Russia. However, no documented reference to the Staffel dated later than November 1941 has been found, so its location is something of a mystery. A published source states that the Staffel was sent back to the Central Sector in Russia with Station at Vyazma. [6]

Jul 42: transferred to Paris-Villacoublay. [7]

Oct-Dec 42: said to have returned to Russia where it took part in the battle for Stalingrad. [8]

Jan 43: now identified at Bourges/France. Here, it was reportedly disbanded and its assets incorporated into multi-engine flight school FFS (C) 15. [9]

Jun 44: Verbindungsstaffel 60 re-established and then disbanded again in March 1945.

12 Jun 44: based at Bourges/France and may have just arrived according to German documents. [10]

4 Jul 44: moved to Oslo/Norway. [11]

25 Dec 44: ordered disbanded at Oslo. [12]

Mar 45: finally disbanded again for the third time. Its Feldpost number deleted 4 Apr 45. [13]
