Formation and History. (Mar 44 - May 45)
Formed Mar 44 at Maritza airfield on Rhodes in the eastern Aegean by renaming Flugbereitschaft Sturmdivision Rhodes. Assigned to Stab/Kommandant Ost-Ägäis on Rhodes.
Apr 44 – May 45: to fall 44, the Staffel had 1 Ju 52, 2 W 34 floatplanes and 3 Fi 156s. One of the W 34 floatplanes was lost in operations around Samos in fall 1944 and the other was destroyed on the ground during an RAF raid on Piscopi/Rhodes on 18 Feb 45. The Ju 52 was used to transport supplies back and forth between Rhodes, Crete and the outlying islands of the eastern Aegean, and all maintenance on the Ju 52 was done at Máleme in NW Crete. The Fi 156s, on the other hand, were used to fly daily shipping reconnaissance patrols off the coast of Rhodes and were frequently fired at by the ships they encountered. The Ju 52 and the 3 Fi 156s were all surrendered to the British when the Rhodes Island garrison capitulated on 8 May 1945.
