2 Oct 1940 – At 12.28 hrs a Ju 88 of 5(F)./122 departed on a channel recce sortie eventually reporting that it had not sighted any shipping between Dover and the isle of Wight[1]

3 Oct 1940 - 1(F)./122 recce sortie to east coast of England, aircraft lost in Pl.Qu. 2200 - 05 East – last distress call timed at 18.45 hrs CET. The pilot, Oberfeldwebel Günter Spanke (born 27 Jan 1910) was found washed ashore at Lyngvig on 2 Dec 1940.[2]

4 Oct 1940 – A 5(F)./122 Ju 88 (departed at 09.51 hrs) reported no sightings of shipping between Dover and the Isle of Wight.[4]

7 Oct 1940 – A single Ju 88 of 5(F)./122, operating under the control of I Fliegerkorps, took off at 08.25 hrs – it reported no shipping sightings between Dover and the Isle of Wight.[5]

Afternoon sortie by a Ju 88 of 5(F)./122 reported no shipping in the area of the Channel it had searched.[6]

8 Oct 1940 – A single Ju 88 of 5(F)./122 reported 1 large and 6 small ships with a single escort off Dover.[7]

9 Oct 1940 – 5(F)./122 sent out a single Ju 88 on a midday sortie over the Channel – reported no shipping between Margate and Brighton.[8]

A further Channel recce and weather sortie was operated by 5(F)./122 starting at 15.00 hrs, this also reported no shipping sightings between Dover and the Isel of Wight.[9]

10 Oct 1940 – 5(F)./122 sent out a Ju 88 at 07.30 hrs for a weather and Channel recce sortie – this aircraft reported a number of small vessels in the vicinity of Folkestone and some shipping in Dover harbour.[10]

11 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 at Eindhoven reported to Fl.Div. 9 that it had one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88s. Eight aircraft were ready with eleven crews available, all ready. One He 111H-2 taken was over by 9. Fliegerdivision.[11]

12 Oct 1940 - A Ju 88 (F6+VN), piloted by Fw. Werner Breese, of 5(F)./122 flew a weather flight encompassing the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight departing Haure Fontaineat 14.00 hrs and returning at 16.45 hrs.[12]

3.(F)/122 (Eindhoven) reported on 13 Oct that it had flown 15 operational hours on this date.[13]

13 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 advised Fl.Div. 9 that it had two Bf 110, one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88s, of which "ten were in order", eleven crews of which all were ready.[14]

14 Oct 1940 - Fl.Div. 9 was advised by 3.(F)/122 that it had two Bf 110, one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88. Ten crews on hand and eleven (serviceable) aircraft available.[15]

15 Oct 1940 – A Ju 88 (F6+AN) of 5(F)./122 flew a weather recce sortie to the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight.[16]

18 Oct 1940 – Fw Werner Breese and crew, of 5(F)./122, flew the midday weather sortie to the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight.[17]

3.(F)/122 reported to 9. Fliegerdivision that it had one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88s. Seven crews were on hand, eleven aircraft which were all serviceable. Total hours flown on operations [presumably that day]: fifteen hours. Two Ju 88s were in Rheims to have their wings lengthened, one He 111H-2 had been detailed to 9. Fliegerdivision.[18]

19 Oct 1940 – A Ju 88 (F6+TN) of 5(F)./122, flew the midday weather sortie to the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight, taking off at 12.20 hrs and returning to Haute Fontaine at 14.39 hrs.[20]

3.(F)/122 (Eindhoven), reported to 9. Fliegerdivision that it had one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88s on strength. Eleven crews on hand, all ready and of the eleven aircraft nine were serviceable. Two Ju 88s in Rheims to have their wings lengthened, one He 111H-2 assigned to 9. Fliegerdivision.[21]

20 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 reported to 9. Fliegerdivision on 21 Oct that it had flown 17 hours this day.[22]

21 Oct 1940 - A Ju 88 (F6+TN) of 5(F)./122, piloted by Fw Werner Breese, was sent out at 07.44 hrs for a weather recce sortie covering the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight landing back at base at 10.03 hrs.[23]

3.(F)/122 reported to 9. Fliegerdivision that it had one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and nine Ju 88s on strength. Five of the aircraft were ready with all eleven crews also available. Two Ju 88s in Rheims to have their wings lengthened, one He 111H-2 detailed to 9. Fliegerdivision.[24]

22 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 announced that Ju 88A-5, W.Nr., 445 had been detailed for IX. Fliegerkorps and brought from Rheims-Betheny the previous day. [25]

24 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 (Eindhoven), reported to 9. Fliegerdivision that it had one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and ten Ju 88s on strength. Six of the aircraft were ready with all eleven crews also available. Two Ju 88s in Rheims to have their wings lengthened, one He 111H-2 detailed to 9. Fliegerdivision.[26]

25 Oct 1940 - 2(F)./122 despatched a Bf 110C-5 from Brussels at 1300 hrs on a recce sortie to the Rolls Royce works at Derby but the aircraft was intercepted and shot down. The pilot told British investigators that he was on a bomber escort mission with several other Bf 110 aircraft.[27]

A Ju 88 (F6+TN) of 5(F)./122, flew the early afternoon weather sortie to the Thames Estuary and the Isle of Wight, taking off at 13.10 hrs and returning to Haute Fontaine at 15.36 hrs.[28]

3.(F)/122, Eindhoven reported to IX. Fliegerkorps that of one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and eleven Ju88, seven were ready. Ju 88A-5, W.Nr. 465 had been taken over at Rheims-Betheny while another two were there having their wings lengthened. One He 111H-2 was detached to IX. Fliegerkorps.[29]

26 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 acquired another Ju 88 with eight serviceable, otherwise no change to those figures reported on 25 Oct 1940. There were eleven crews in the unit.[31]

27 Oct 1940 - 3.(F)/122, Eindhoven reported to IX. Fliegerkorps that of one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and twelve Ju88, nine were ready. There were eleven crews, and all were available, two Ju 88s at Rheims having their wings lengthened and an He 111H-2 had been detached to IX. Fliegerkorps. There had been no operations in the preceding 24 hours.[32]

28 Oct 1940 - 3.(F)/122, Eindhoven, reported to IX. Fliegerkorps, that it had 14 aircraft of which 9 were ready. There were , again 11 crews whom were all available. 2 Ju 88s were at at Rheims having their wings lengthened and He 111H-2 was detached to IX. Fliegerkorps.[33]

29 Oct 1940 - A Ju 88 (F6+TN) of 5(F)./122, piloted by Fw Werner Breese, was despatched on a morning recce sortie of the Thames Estuary and the English Channel. It departed Haute Fontaine at 08.05 hrs returning at 10.07 hrs.[34]

3.(F)/122 at Eindhoven sent the following strength return to Fliegerkorps IX:

Total aircraft: 1 He 111H-2; 1 He 111H-3 and 12 Ju 88.

Aircraft ready: 8

Total Crews: 11

Crews ready: 11

30 Oct 1940 – 3.(F)/122 reported to IX. Fliegerkorps that of one He 111H-2, one He 111H-3 and twelve Ju88, nine were ready. There were eleven crews, all of whom were available. 2 Ju 88s at Rheims having their wings lengthened and the He 111H-2 was still detached to IX. Fliegerkorps.[37]
