Gefechtsverband Nord
Gefechtsverband Nord
(FpN: L 49470)
Ordered formed 16 July 1942 as a special task force to provide air support to the 2. Armee in the sector north, northeast and east of Voronezh after German spearheads had advanced from around Kursk and taken the city, which lies northeast of Kharkov near the junction of the Voronezh and Don rivers. The Gefechtsverband is noteworthy as being the only one (or one of the few) to be assigned a separate Feldpost number. It initially consisted of elements of KG 76, NAGr. 10, and a collection of fighter and dive-bomber Gruppen that were attached to it for various periods of time. Later, Hungarian and Italian air units were attached to it. Its commander was Oberst Alfred Bülowius. The Gefechtsverband continued operations in the Voronezh – Rossosh sector until 31 October 1942, according to most accounts, with Bülowius becoming Kommandeur of the 1. Fliegerdivision at Dugino/NE of Smolensk on 24 October.[1]
